John Key Brown

     John Key BROWN was born on 14 February 1831 in Great Hale, Lincolnshire, His parents were Thomas and Mary Ann BROWN.1,2 In the census of 30 March 1851 in Heckington, Lincolnshire, he was listed as aged 21 born in Great Hale, a servant of ? TURNER (a Farmer of 100 acres).3
John married Mary PASK, daughter of William PASK and Bridget MASSEY, on 11 November 1851 in Episcopal Church, Ewerby, Lincolnshire. They were married by Reverend Polled.1,4,2
In the month of October, 1853 John Key BROWN sailed from Liverpool to New York on the ship Emma Fields. The ship was at sea for 35 days, and Cholera broke out. From 439 passengers onboard 42 died.1,2,5 He worked at Fultonville for awhile then went to Newark, New Jersey to find his brother-in-law William Pask. He stayed there until his wife and son arrived from England.2 In 1855, Mary and baby Thomas immigrated on the ship Jacob A. Westervelt. The journey took six weeks and they arrived in May.1,2 They stayed in Newark throughout the summer and fall of 1855. The winter of 1855 was spent in Williamsburg with John BOOLS, an old friend of his father's from England. In March, in the early spring of 1856 they moved to the woods called Gargona in Brown county, Ohio where John ran a sawmill. It was here that Sarah Elizabeth was born in May 23, 1856. The family then moved to Coonsborough, Clermont County, where Mary Kesiah was born on November 14, 1857. The next move was back to Gargona, working for the same man in the sawmills. Here Bettie Maria was born on February 25 1859.
The next move was to Neville Ohio, where John ran a distilling engine. Charles William (December 4 1860), Samuel Elijah (October 24 1862), Bridget Anne (August 17 1864), and Eliza Rebecca "Aunt Lida" (August 13 1867), was born together with twins John K., and Priscilla. Unfortunately Priscilla died the same day (January 28 1870) and John lived four days and died on February 1, 1870.
In 1871 they moved to Cincinnati, where they lived until 1878. Their children Emma Frances (September 16 1875) and Jonathan David (January 28 1878) were born there.
In November 1877 John accepted the position of engineer at the Peru Woolen Mills, Peru, Indiana. His family followed him in June, 1878, and this city has been their home since then. In the spring of 1883 he began to work for the Indiana Manufacturing Company in the capacity of engineer for 17 years. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church of this city during the pastorate of Chesteen Smith, which faith he held true to the end.
Altogether John Key and Mary Elizabeth Brown had twelve children, two of these dying in infancy.1,2
John was in an undated photograph together with Mary Elizabeth.6 John was in an undated family group photograph.7
John died on 6 February 1915 in Peru, Miami County, Indiana, America, at the age of 83.1,8 He was buried on 11 February 1915 in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, Miami County, America; The funeral was conducted at the residence of the daughter, Mrs. J. J. Dye, 526 East Second Street, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, by Rev. Charles H. Smith, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, and the body was interred in Mount Hope cemetery.1

Research Note: Philip wrote: "There is a babies cap that could be 175 years old. It is the cap John Key Brown and his son Thomas Brown was christened in, probably at Lincolnshire, Great Hale, England.9"

Mary Elizabeth PASK was born on 15 March 1832 in Ewerby, Lincolnshire.1,2 She was the daughter of William PASK and Bridget MASSEY.1 In the census of 7 June 1841 in Ewerby, Lincolnshire, she was listed as aged 9 assumed to be the daughter of William PASK.3 She was listed as a Dressmaker, aged 19 born in Ewerby, a Visitor of John & Bridget HOLMES (a Shoemaker) in the census of 30 March 1851 in South Kyme, Lincolnshire.4

Mary died on 19 July 1915 in Peru, Miami County, Indiana, America, at the age of 83.1 Her obituary, from the Peru Daily Chronical, July 19 1915 reads:
"Elizabeth Brown's obituary states- Mrs. Brown dead. Mrs. J. K. Brown, widow of the late J. K. Brown, whose death occurred last February, occurred at her home 526 east Second street Monday evening at 5:50 o'clock. She had been in ill health for some time and her death was due to a sort of complication of diseases together with old age. She was eighty-four years of age and is survived by ten children namely: Thomas Brown, of Newark, N.J., Sam E. Brown, of Indianapolis, Jack Brown, of Cincinnati, William Brown, of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. J. J. Dye of Peru, Mrs. Lawrence Mc/Call of Rochester, Ind., Mrs. Charles Reyburn of Muncie, Mrs. S. W. Fetrow of Peru, Mrs. J. H. Miller residing north of Peru and Miss Emma Brown, of Peru. Mrs Brown was an native of England. The funeral services will be held at the J. J. Dye residence, 526 east Second street Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock."1
